I was required to design and make theatrical costumes and accessories for hire, from Medieval to present day dress. I was involved in all stages of production, from design, choice of colour and fabrics, pattern cutting, dressmaking and finishing. Being assistant manager of the department entailed ordering fabrics and trimmings, dealing with customers and coordinating and supervising four staff.

I was commissioned to make a functioning costume of the cartoon mascot character of “Tim”, to be used at publicity events. Incorporated into the costume were a carved foam head, and 18” high stilts.

I designed and made all the costumes for this traveling production of the traditional children’s story. The costumes were loosely based on Victorian clothing, since the story was originally published in this period, and had to be extremely multi-functional and versatile since just four actors were playing all of the characters.

Music Video for SEP by Human Film

The concept of the video was based around the iconic world of The Wizard of Oz, and I was required to design, source, and make costumes for the cast and extras. The characters included Dorothy, the good and bad witches, Scarecrow, Lion, and Tin-man, along with munchkins and contemporary characters with modern clothes.

“The Pilgrim’s Progress”, Pointed Arrow Theatre Company

I designed and created all the costumes for this adaptation of Bunyan’s novel. The characters were divided into those in the ‘world of pen and ink’ (i.e. in Bunyan’s imagination, and in his book), and those in ‘the world of flesh and blood’, the real world. The pen and ink characters were dressed predominantly in white, printed with quotations from the text, and kept strictly monochrome, whereas the real world or historical characters were more realistic and vibrant.

Skills & other qualifications
  • In January 2007 I attended a two day corset making course and learnt how to draft a corset pattern from scratch, and how to construct the corset using both modern and historical techniques.
  • As a part of my degree course I completed modules on:
  • Pattern Cutting, covering principal techniques, historical pattern cutting and contemporary design.
  • Fabric Manipulation, including machine and hand embroidery, aplique, hand smocking and shibori.
  • Printed Textiles, involving the uses of screen-printing, heat transfer, disperse dyes and surface decoration design including batik tie-dying and silk painting.
  • I have plenty of experience using various types of industrial sewing machines and overlockers.
  • I am experienced with the use of foam in costumes – I have used sheet foam as part of costume construction, and have used block foam to carve and sculpt into heads, shoes, wheels, etc.
  • I am a confident and gregarious person with good social skills.
